A port is one "pipe" containing 16 midi channels. LS enables you to create as many ports as you want, per midi device. (A recent upgrade in LS CVS. If you're running the stable version, there is a limit of 100 ports per device). So if you have something like 8 instruments, each with different articulations, you could create 8 ports, which will give you 16 channels per instrument.
