limit on midi ports per device

I've been experimenting with pushing the limits on midi and audio devices, and discovered that a midi device has a limit of 100 ports.
Is this an arbitrary decision and could it be changed to a larger number, i.e. 250 midi ports per midi device, without any repercussions?

p.s. a gentle reminder about the programme changes queue being limited to 100. This is insufficient for large scale works, and i ask if this can be bumped to 512, or something similar.
