Several questions from a Newbie (program crashes, play mode)

Post by DerRobert » Thu Feb 18, 2010 5:37 pm

Hello to Everyone,

I'm Robert from Berlin and a LinuxSampler fan for three days now. I spent the last two nights with configuration, trying out, installing other free sampling software (shortcircuit) and I like LS now - although the program looks a bit unstable to me. I'm also very new to sampling but after some days I've understood the main principles of sampling quite well.

I have a bunch of questions and I hope someone can help me...

1) is there any possibility to assign my Pitch-Wheel to some effect? Or is this a problem I have so solve at my keyboard, because when I use it it - surprise - pitches !

2) Is there a function to play a sample in this so called "one shot" mode (forward shot in shortcircuit), that means to play the sample without holding the key? I played around with the release value and changed it so 60., the highest value, but the amplitude falls down (it's a 30 sec Sample which I don't want to play through a sequencer, because it's not played during the whole song)

3) what does the Release-scale (0 .. 60) mean? 60 % ? db?

4) What is the meaning of groups? is it right, that samples that are grouped together will be played together? So if I have different sounds on different keys each of them has to be put in a different group?

5) I have problems with the LSCP files. My setup is the following:
- LS for Windows
- Audio Device: Line6 Toneport GX (ASIO interface)
- Midi: creative soundblaster extige USB
this works fine and is not the problem. but when I save the sampler configuration, exit JSampler and LinuxSampler and start it all again and run the script it crashes and cannot connect the devices. So I played around in the script and noticed that when I delete the SET VOLUME 0.81 command it works. Why ??

6) maybe some of my problems are fixed with the newest LS package version, but the thing that it is not possible for to compile the latest version (I'm not that specialist in programming etc.). I hope somebody here has the latest version built and could send it to me? I hope here is some expert for which this is not so much work.

Thanks a lot in advance!!
Robert

No, sorry, the gig format doesn't support using pitch wheel for anything but pitch bends, and LS only support CC controllers for modulation of FX sends, not pitch bend.

No, there is no such parameter in the gig format. The only way is to use release 60 as you did.
3) what does the Release-scale (0 .. 60) mean? 60 % ? db?
It is in seconds, the length of the release phase.
4) What is the meaning of groups? is it right, that samples that are grouped together will be played together? So if I have different sounds on different keys each of them has to be put in a different group?
No. Groups are used when you want a sample to be stopped when another one is started, for example an open hi-hat sound that is stopped when a closed hi-hat is hit. If you put both hi-hat sounds in the same group they will stop each other, that is, only one sample at a time can play in each group.

I don't know. Can you post the LSCP script?

Hello Andreas,

I don't know if you are from Germany but I will answer in English, so it is for everyone! :-)

First: thanks for answering all my questions. I'm replying so late after your posting because the site was down a few days !?

Which sampler-formats or which other sampler software allow one-shot playing? will there be the possibility (if other formats are supported) in future in LinuxSampler?

I don't know if I really got the meaning of groups. At the moment I have put all samples I potentially want to play at the same time (and that don't cause to stop another one) in one group for each. Is that the typical way?

The problem with the LSCP I think is a problem of my sound card and its driver. It an USB ASIO Interface (line 6 toneport GX). I suppose the driver is still busy after closing JSampler Fantasia.
The following way works:
- saving the lscp script
- unplugging the toneport from the pc
- plugging it in again
- running JSampler and the script.

But if I run the script after a reopening without unplugging it it crashes. I suppose everything is fine with the script...
Do you have an idea?

thank you so much in advance!

Robert

Well, sfz does, with the loop_mode=one_shot opcode, but this opcode isn't supported in LS yet.

If you don't want the samples to stop because of other samples, you should not put them in a group at all. That's the most common way.

No, sorry. The ASIO code in LS is supposed to call ASIOExit when LS exits, and I don't know if there's something more that should be done to make ASIO happy.
