Basic Drum Sample Player Idea

Hi All,
Just joined the forum.
I am seeking a simple solution for playing back drum samples. The concept is to use a low latency linux system driven by MIDI notes and outputting through a sound card.
The key software feature would be to build kits by assigning 128 midi notes to samples through ergonomic drag and drop or by file name prefix (as available drum samples are in the 10's of thousands). Very minimal sample controls are needed: Volume, Pan, Velocity to Volume, Velocity Off and sample tune. An audition feature would also be needed.
The concept is a minimalistic drum sample player with a huge library. Coupling an ergonomic kit assembly and efficient and intuitive sample management will make it shine.
Not in Scope: Drum Sequencer, sample editor as they exist elsewhere.
Could this be done?
Thanks!
