Why double sets of gain/volume controls?

Something I find potentially confusing is the double sets of volume controls per channel:
* First, you have the per sample channel volume setting that is LinuxSampler specific.
* Second, you have the MIDI/instrument volume setting that is controlled by MIDI CC #7.
Wouldn't it be nice if the sample channel volume (set via LSCP) and MIDI channel volume in practice were to be two alternative ways to control the same gain?
