Re: The Design Thread
Heck, make the DSP language include enough functionality, design the modules to load as dynamic library objects, and you could make the entire sampler out of those building blocks. You could make anything else you want, for that matter. How about some Bezier curve oscillators? I don't know about you...

Re: A friend of mine passed away yesterday morning
Thanks, everyone. I guess I just wanted to explain why I haven't been around at all lately.

A friend of mine passed away yesterday morning
A friend of mine, Jay Ricketts, the first friend I made since moving here to Michigan, died yesterday morning of medical complications. He was 52, a husband and father, and among the finest keyboardists I have ever known. I'm still in a daze about all of this, as we had a lot of plans for the summer...

Re: Amp simulation and circuit modeling
It looks like I'm not alone in my thinking: http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~dtyeh/papers/yeh07_dafx_distortion.pdf He has the same idea: simulate the circuits on a perceptual level, using waveshapers for the non-linear components. Designing the waveshaper becomes a trick, though, because what you want to...

Re: ALSA/Ubuntu rant
Heh, this should be called my Gentoo Install diary instead. I tried doing the install tonight, but ran into two issues: 1) None of my kernel modules were able to load. 2) dhcpcd was apparently unable to properly grab an address. On the other hand, grub works perfectly and has no issues booting to my...

Re: ALSA/Ubuntu rant
I've had dual-boot systems running for quite some time now. Really, it's just the fact that I've never manually configured grub for dual-boot before (I have for single-boot) that bothers me, but I've read the handbook entry on that part, and it looks easy, so I'm not too worried about it. Really, it...

Re: ALSA/Ubuntu rant
I poked around the JAD website, and the various software versions are also too out-of-date for my liking. I can do the manual Gentoo install, it's just a matter of making the time. My biggest worry is being able to set up the bootloader to also allow booting to my Windows partitions. I know it's pos...

Re: ALSA/Ubuntu rant
Well, my first adventure using the Gentoo LiveCD, supposedly the easiest way to install Gentoo, is complete and utter failure. Bug after bug after bug. I guess I'll have to do it the long way with the minimal install after all. Or try out that new Suse-based studio distro. Maybe I'll give that one a...

Re: ALSA/Ubuntu rant
Actually, I've given up on Ubuntu Studio and giving Gentoo a go. I've installed and used Gentoo a number of times, so I think I can handle it. In fact, the project I was knee-deep in when I left the ISP to return to college was converting the Slackware servers Gentoo Hardened. This may yet take an i...

Re: Ideas for new sample libraries
Thoughts on how I might make a didgeridoo library (let's see if I can explain this well): Each drone will start with the "attack" (inasmuch as you can call it that), leading into a nice long drone. Then after the drone, various articulations will be played at various speeds. The final wave file for ...
