Yes, I guessed that's was the situation. Consoles is also usually sold at loss (the manufacturer makes all the money on licensing SDK and the rights to release titles for the platform), so that's also a factor.

I agree that running Linuxsampler on PS3 today might not be any advantage of the reasons you mention. But what would be feasible (and probably more so on a PS3 than a PC) is implementation of an advanced synthesis (additive, waveguide or something completely else) that is computational intensive but...

Of course, Linuxsampler will run but there are still some more hoops to jump through to take advantage of the computing power, in other words patching the application:
