Side thread: Sndobj, Python, and RT-safe
Okay, here's another question that is going to reveal my ignorance even more. Anders' recent adventures with Sndobj has me curious about the library, it's ability to be used by Python, and what it means for an application and language to be real-time safe. Specifically, why is Python not suitable fo...

Re: Could someone give me a reality check on something?
Okay, stupid me, rather than hitting the "quote" button to reply to cuse's reply to me, managed to hit "Edit" instead, and I ended up screwing up his reply to me. Maybe I shouldn't have mod powers after all. I PM'd cuse with an apology, but nevertheless, his post answered my questions, so thank you,...

Could someone give me a reality check on something?
Okay, say you're doing a real-time FFT on an input signal. It doesn't matter what it might be at the moment. An FFT, if I read all of the descriptions correctly (I'm going by what my copy of the Csound Book tells me), basically splits a time-domain signal up into a (fairly large) number of bins acro...

Re: The Design Thread
Already found them, thanks! To be honest, the basic capabilities don't seem to be beyond what any modern software sampler is capable of. In fact, my feature requests involving modulating loop points and the like appear to go beyond the Synclav's capabilities. Only the resynthesis capabilities seem t...

Re: The Design Thread
Actually, Ron Grainer did want to give her co-composer credit, according to that wikipedia article you linked to.
I'm going to see if I can find a tech or user's manual for the Synclavier, to find some inspiration.

Re: The Design Thread
To be complete, Delia Derbyshire did not compose the Doctor Who theme, but had recorded the first-used version of it. That in no way diminishes her genius, though. I personally think there are a lot of things we can learn from the BBC Radiophonics Lab and musique concrete in general. In fact, you'll...

Re: The Design Thread
You have to think of Reaktor as being something of a synth-making application. At one level, you can load up lots of different instruments and use it as a straight synthesizer. At the deeper level, you get access to lots of DSP objects (adders and multipliers, delay lines, basic filters, etc.) which...

Re: The Design Thread
Well, I'm glad to see some activity in this thread finally, at any rate. I know we aren't really trying to build some twisted version of Reaktor here, but in a way, that's exactly what I'd like: the ability to make building blocks that can be combined with other building blocks made by anyone else. ...

Re: The Design Thread
That's a very good point, actually. My thinking was, if we build the framework, from there, we can build a useful instrument that people can then use directly. But, the underlying framework is exposed if people want to try coding their own modules. The first question I have is, where would we start?...

Re: The Design Thread
The other thing to think about is, if a framework could be made wherein modules can be coded and loaded (hey, a rhyme!) and then used, it would be much easier to attract other programming talent, who would see that they don't need to know the internal specifics of the engine in order to make cool ne...
