Amp simulation and circuit modeling
I decided to break this off of a discussion in the "new engine" forum, as it was getting off-topic there. To summarize, I've been putting my mind to the problem of how to make a guitar amp simulator. The traditional methods are very difficult, and aren't really producing results that I would call fi...

Re: The Ideas Collection
You know, I don't know why I'm so hot for an amp sim, as I'm really not much of a guitarist. It just sounds like an interesting challenge. Ultimately, I wouldn't mind trying my hand at modeling a Hammond Novachord. :D Everything you've said in your post makes me wonder if we shouldn't be thinking ab...

Re: The Ideas Collection
Oh, believe me, my attitude is anything but positive. I'm in the middle of a huge familial financial crisis, which leaves me unable to buy the software I want, which is what I'd rather do, to be honest. I'm diving head-first into making my own software because I feel I have no choice in the matter n...

Re: The Ideas Collection
Then how does an application like Spice prevent that same issue from happening with its own models? Looks like i have the enthusiasm, but not the skill. Differential equation sets are beyond not only my abilities, but the abilities of all the people at the college I go to. This might have to wait un...

Re: The Ideas Collection
Something that would be a really important and useful tool, that I don't know whether or not it exists on Linux, is a deconvolver. This is an application that can output sine wave sweeps and white noise of various types out of the sound card, to be input into external gear, and the result recorded b...

Sample library and synthesis musings
Probably the most important contribution I see myself making to the new project is the creation of sample libraries and associated patches. Lately, I've been really inspired by the videos of the new Spectrasonics synth, Omnisphere: http://www.spectrasonics.net/omnisphere_teaser/explore.html There ar...

Re: The Ideas Collection
The thing is, a completely discrete simulation must be at least possible within the computer, as there are real-time versions of Spice that can accept an input signal and process it. It's might not be efficient, but that would be the interesting problem to crack, right? My dream is to have a library...

Re: The Ideas Collection
Hehe, well, the Music-DSP list just told me that circuit modeling is treated as a "closely-guarded secret" by those who know how to do it, as it is their living. Nevertheless, I did get some links to papers and some tips. I'm tempted to reply back and mention my aim is to make an open source library...

Re: The Ideas Collection
I'm actually already subscribed, thanks. I was just musing. I'll get back on topic.
Although it's not completely off-topic, as I'm hoping some good tube and other circuit component models will serve to make some nice-sounding filters and the like.

Re: The Ideas Collection
That amp sim is based on a cubic waveshaper. I'm hoping for a more complete component model. I've been reading a lot of old electronics theory texts that describe how tubes work and how to model them. Granted, those models are for design purposes, but it's something to build on. I've also been readi...
