Attend Orchestral Dress Rehersals

Post by ccherrett » Fri Sep 12, 2008 9:30 am

I read in the book:

The Guide to Midi Orchestration 3rd Edition

That you can often get into you local orchestra dress rehearsals by calling up and asking to study what they are doing for education purposes.

This worked out awesome for us because our children are home schooled and we are teaching them orchestration. So Mom and Dad get to go along.

So I called up. Presented my situation and they are getting back to me soon as to if and when I could go but they did already send me all the dates I could go.

So I am pumped! :)

I will keep you posted.

Wow, that sounds promising. On a slightly different note its great how cheap classical recordings are these days. I went down to my local record store the other day and picked up a 4 cd set of Shostakovitch for $5! The quality is the performances and the recordings is great for the price I paid.

I've always thought that listening is the best way to learn about all facets of music and the huge catalogue of recordings available these days is an invaluable resource for a young composer. However nothing beats actually sitting in front of a full 100 piece orchestra :D !
