LADSPA lscp.....

Post by Alex » Sun Oct 03, 2010 12:30 am

Just noticed the added LADSPA commands in the news section of the website. Good news and more power to LS. Thanks to the devs.

A question.

At the moment, when we create a channel in LS (and Fantasia is the weapon of choice here), there is currently no way of routing any audio into LS with something like an audio input device. (the natural partner of creating an audio output device.) This might seem a strange question, but if LS can shortly accept adding LADSPA effects to a channel, then there could be a use case for routing external audio into LS, and into a channel that may have LADSPA effects on it. So the user would create a "blank effects" channel, add the desired effects, and route external audio into that channel, to be subject to the LADSPA effects, the same as any existing channels using only internal audio out, for the gig, sf2, and sfz engines. (The signal from the effects channel would then be subject to routing out through the existing LS audio device out process)
This would also have the added advantage of saving the configuration as part of an lscp file, so the user might "bind" an audio input device with any other external apps, and have that configuration saved for repeated use, without having to do this task manually each time, in a jack patchbay of some sort.

Additionally, when using the existing FX sends framework, for sending a channel output to something like Jconv, an external input device could also serve to bring the Jconv signal back into LS, using a blank channel, and then user could then regulate the levels for a Wet/dry mix more quickly and effectively. (Without having to use an additional app or utility to route the Jconv output, and regulate its levels in some way.)

I appreciate LS at its heart is a sampler, so that's not lost on me, but there may be an additional opportunity here to add another string to LS's already formidable bow. If there is a plan to add a mixer to LS in the future, then having the means to route external audio into that mixer might simplify a user's setup considerably.

Comments from other users on the potential for this in their particular use case are welcome.

Alex.
